A wooden board with British cheeses, pink pickled onions, sliced pickles, chutney, apple wedges and oatcakes

British Cheese Board with Quick Pickles and Tomato Chutney

A proper British cheese board needs very little: three or four brilliant cheeses, something sharp, something sweet and something crisp. The homemade pickles and chutney take less than half an hour.

Method

  1. For the pickled onions, warm the vinegar, sugar and salt until dissolved. Pour over the onions in a jar and leave for at least 30 minutes.

  2. For the chutney, simmer the tomatoes, onion, vinegar, sugar and mustard seeds in a wide pan for 12–15 minutes, stirring, until jammy and thick. Cool.

  3. Take the cheeses out of the fridge an hour before serving.

  4. Arrange the cheeses on a board with space between them and a knife for each.

  5. Add the pickled onions, chutney in a small bowl, fruit, nuts and crackers. Serve.

Serving ideas

Pair with a crisp cider, a dry white wine or a strong cup of tea. The chutney keeps for three weeks in a sterilised jar.
